Development Approval Secured

A significant step for South Energy has been reached in the development process of the proposed plan to build a solar farm in Waroona, smoothing the path for the Western Australia to become front-runners in the race against climate change.

The project on Landwehr Road, 11km south-west of Waroona, was considered at the local joint development assessment panel on November 15, where the Mid-West/Wheatbelt JDAP’s Director of Planning & Economic Development had approved the application subject to condition.

The 183MW Waroona Solar Farm is to be located on a 308-hectare site, which is around 117 kilometres south of Perth and will feature 488,800 solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers. The facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 67,000 homes and avoid approximately 285,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

The solar farm will contribute to a more reliable electricity network for WA, as some of the ageing conventional coal-fired power station units gradually retire in the coming years and gives opportunity to the community for jobs in construction and ongoing maintenance.

Currently, South Energy will carry on working with Western Power regarding the grid connection application. Presuming that the project gains all the subsequent necessary approvals going forward, South Energy intends commencing construction early in 2021, with full commercial operations to commence by the end of 2022.
